Boustany Moves to Block Obama's Abuse of Executive Power

Press Release

Date: April 20, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Dr. Charles Boustany (R-Lafayette) supported legislation that will block any future use of Executive action by President Obama. H.R. 4956, the End Executive Overreach Act, is intended to rein in the excessive use of executive actions by the President and ensure Congress regains its singular lawmaking authority.

The legislation would:

Reassert Congress' power of the purse by completely defunding any future executive orders by the President until the end of the Obama Presidency in 2017.
Suspend the rule-making authority of government agencies to prevent further burdensome regulations until the end of the Obama Presidency in 2017.
Retain the ability of Congress to deliberate any issue considered to be of public safety or wellbeing under regular order.

The legislation would take effect once the bill is enacted and would expire at the end of the Obama Presidency on January 21, 2017.

Boustany said: "This President has continually overstepped the constitutional limits of his executive authority. When he can't get what he wants through Congress, he uses executive orders to force his agenda down the throats of the American people, stomping all over the Constitution in the process. It is time for Congress to put a stop to this unlawful abuse of power. This legislation will cease the endless flood of job-killing regulations imposed upon the American people by the Obama Administration and return the power to write the laws of this nation to the place our founders intended it to be -- with Congress."
